Psyllium husk
Psyllium husk, ook wel psylliumvezel of vlozaadvezel genoemd, is afkomstig van de zaadschillen van planten uit het geslacht Plantago, vooral Plantago ovata. Psyllium staat bekend als een oplosbare, gelvormende vezel die veel water kan binden. In het maag-darmkanaal vormt psyllium een slijmachtige gel, waardoor het invloed kan hebben op de consistentie, vochtigheid en passage van de ontlasting. Bij honden en katten wordt psyllium vooral onderzocht in relatie tot ontlastingskwaliteit, chronische dikke-darmdiarree, constipatie, fecale vochtigheid en ondersteuning van een gezond darmmilieu.
Psyllium husk en zijn eigenschappen
Psyllium behoort tot de groep van oplosbare, waterbindende voedingsvezels. In wetenschappelijk onderzoek worden verschillende eigenschappen beschreven die relevant zijn voor honden en katten:
- Natuurlijke bron: psyllium husk wordt gewonnen uit de zaadschillen van Plantago ovata en bestaat grotendeels uit oplosbare vezels en slijmstoffen.
- Gelvormende vezel: psyllium kan water opnemen en een gel vormen, waardoor het de vochtbalans en structuur van de ontlasting kan beïnvloeden.
- Invloed op ontlastingskwaliteit: bij honden wordt psyllium onderzocht in relatie tot chronische dikke-darmdiarree, ontlastingsfrequentie en fecale consistentie.
- Ondersteuning bij fecale passage: bij katten is psyllium onderzocht in relatie tot constipatie, fecale vochtigheid, ontlastingsscore en defecatiefrequentie.
Onderzoek naar psyllium is uitgevoerd bij honden en katten, vooral binnen de context van ontlastingsproblemen. Bij honden ligt de nadruk onder andere op chronische dikke-darmdiarree, ontlastingsconsistentie en defecatiefrequentie. Bij katten wordt psyllium vooral onderzocht bij constipatie en in relatie tot fecale vochtigheid en ontlastingspassage.
